Maker Highlight: GUBI
Usually, one foot in the past and one foot in the future spells disaster for the present. But GUBI’s use of traditional inspiration to rework modern designs is definitively an exception to the rule.
Founded in 1967 in Denmark by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen, the design house made a lasting impression with furniture designs, textiles, and lighting from its inception. Their collections — inspired by their foundational designs from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s — show modern classics paired with Danish, Scandinavian, and international influences. They continue to produce original handicraft, while also highlighting some of the biggest stars in international contemporary design. From tables and seating to office pieces, mirrors, and more, their focus on reviving traditions and aesthetics from the past, creating pieces that exude both convenience and luxury.
With a dedication to creating work that’s as beautiful as it is usable, we appreciate their team as much as we do their brand. GUBI has a genuine understanding, optimism, and appreciation for design partnerships, and they’re focused on the product first and foremost. That laser focus is unique to their brand; the product, likewise, speaks for itself in terms of luxury and sustainability.
And that’s why we’re so delighted to team up with them as often as we do. They’re always dedicated to being helpful and show how they can be an extension of our team, bringing well-represented and beloved designs that are as ingrained in the movement as they are fresh-faced for today.
OUR FAVORITES
Some of GUBI’s most recognizable work are chairs — one of their designs has been added to the permanent collection at MoMA, and countless more have won design awards — but we’re equally enthralled with their table, sofa, and lighting work. Here’s a few of our most loved.
